Round 2 - 23 September 2007

A shock defeat for the 2006 Manx Monarch, Alexander Areshchenko, his first ever in the Isle of Man after 19 games without defeat. Some amazing games - how did Richard Almond manage to avoid defeat against Elisabeth Paehtz? Richard Palliser left his queen en prise and resigned immediately against Roy Phillips. Milos Pavlovic is finding out the hard way that a North of England delicacy is fresh grandmaster meat, served raw - he has now lost to both Jeff Horner and Oliver Jackson, both veteran North of England players. Adam Ashton seemed to be doing very well against Mikhail Kobalia but he couldn't break through and was eventually overrun.

Here's a few examples of the agonies and ecstasies of round two.

Vitali GolodAlexander AreshchenkoGolod,Vitali (2589) - Areshchenko,Alexander (2645) [E94]

1 Nf3 Nf6 2 c4 g6 3 Nc3 Bg7 4 e4 d6 5 d4 0-0 6 Be2 e5 7 0-0 Na6 8 Be3 h6 9 Ne1 [9 dxe5 Ng4 10 Bf4 Nxe5 draw agreed, was Ikonnikov-Areshchenko, at this tournament in 2005.] 9 ..Ng4!? [9 ..c6 and; 9 ..Nh7 have been played here before.] 10 Bxg4 Bxg4 11 f3 [11 Qxg4 exd4 12 Bxh6 is the computer's suggestion but it doesn't look quite right.] 11 ..Bd7 12 Qd2 Kh7 13 Rd1 f5 14 dxe5 Bxe5 15 c5 Bxc3 [The text move looks a little loose, and Black cannot capture on c5 because of the insufficiently defended bishop on d7, of course. 15 ..f4 seems like a plausible alternative.] 16 Qxc3 fxe4 [Black offered a draw with his 16th move. If 16 ..Nxc5 17 Bxc5 dxc5 18 Nd3! gives White a solid plus. If 18 ..Qe7 19 Rfe1 and White continues to exert pressure.] 17 cxd6 cxd6 18 Qd2 g5 [Fritz prefers 18 ..Bb5 . The text provides White with a further weakness at which to direct his fire.] 19 h4! Bb5 20 Rf2 g4 [Black's kingside is now wide open and it is just a matter of finding a way through.] 21 fxe4! Bc6 [21 ..g3 22 Rxf8 Qxf8 23 Nf3 Rd8 24 Qd5 is very good for White.] 22 Rxf8 Qxf8 23 Qxd6

23 ..Bxe4? [Black should take his chances with 23 ..Qxd6 24 Rxd6 Re8 25 Kf2 Rxe4 when it is not all over.] 24 Qe6 Bc6 25 Rd6 1-0

(This game is annotated by Vitali Golod on the best game page)

Mateusz BartelVladimir GeorgievBartel,Mateusz (2609) - Georgiev,Vladimir (2567)

[This position had looked better for Black to me, but in fact White soon whips up a strong attack.] 32 ..Rxc4 33 Ng3 [It is now evident that the knight will bring mighty pressure to bear on d6.] 33 ..Rxb2 34 Nf5+ Kd7 35 Nxd6 Rd4 36 Rxd4 Nxd4 37 Rxf6 a5 [Black should perhaps counterattack with 37 ..Nf3!? ] 38 Nf5 Ne2? [Too optimistic by far. Black should probably play 38 ..Nxf5 39 Rxf5 Kd6 when he is worse but not without hope.] 39 Rxf7+ Ke6? 40 Re7+ Kf6 41 h4! [In order to avert the threat of 42 e5+ and 43 Rg7 mate, Black has to surrender the defence of his knight.] 1-0

Vasilios KotroniasMark HebdenKotronias,Vasilios (2602) - Hebden,Mark (2540)

[White had been winning for a long time but now came a double oversight.] 83 Kg7? [83 g6 wins.] 83 ..Nxf7? [Black missed a drawing chance with 83 ..Qh8+! 84 Kxh8 (84 Kg6 Qxe5 85 f8Q Qe4+ also draws) 84 ..Nxf7+ 85 Kg7 Nxe5 and Black can hold the advance of both the white pawns.] 84 Kxf7 Qh7+ 85 Qg7 Qe4 86 Qf6+ Kd7 [Neither player spotted what they had missed during the game or after, but the ever-vigilant Fritz alerted me to the drawing possibility when I keyed the game in. I approached the two players afterwards as they sat down to dinner together. I mentioned the 83...Qh8+ possibility (wondering whether perhaps I had keyed in the moves incorrectly). Both players were momentarily stunned but the penny dropped simultaneously (they confirmed the correctness of the position). Mark Hebden's reaction to a missed half point was to laugh. That would not have been the reaction of many other players!] 1-0

Bernard BanninkPeter WellsBannink,Bernard (2271) - Wells,Peter K (2517)

[White had just played 25 f2-f4 which was an error. Peter Wells spotted a clever finesse to win from this position.] 25 ..Qa5! 26 Bb2 [If White keeps his bishop on the a3-f8 diagonal with 26 Bd6 then 26 ..Bd4+! wins because 27 Nxd4 allows 27 ..Rxe1+ or indeed Qxe1+ and mate next move.] 26 ..Qc5+ [White must lose at least a piece.] 0-1

Richard PalliserRoy PhillipsPalliser,Richard (2417) - Phillips,Roy (2271)

[White is clearly better and his opponent was in the most horrendous time trouble, with about 30 seconds for eight moves. But it was White who was about to suffer a shocking loss...] 33 Bxa7?? Nxc3 [The queen disappeared from the board in a nanosecond and White resigned almost as quickly. In that moment he decided that Black's shortage of time would not be a problem given his (now) overwhelming material advantage.] 0-1
