Leaders after Round 2: Nakamura, Wells, Kulaots (top), Korchnoi, Ghaem Maghami (bottom)

John Saunders reports: There was a quick draw on top board between Pavlovic and Smirin, but a quick win for 17-year-old US star, Hikaru Nakamura.

Berzinsh,R (2455) - Nakamura,H (2601) [B33]

22 Rxa5? [22 0-0 is better. Black soon gets a big advantage after the text.] 22 ..Rxa5 23 bxa5 Qxa5 24 0-0 Rc8 (Now White cannot save his c-pawn) 25 Rb1 Bxd5 26 Bxd5 Rxc3 27 Qd2 Nf6 28 Qa2? Qc5! 0-1 [A surprisingly swift end. Black threatens Rc2. If 29 Rf1 Nxd5 30 exd5 Rd3 and Black wins a second pawn.]

Stuart Conquest played a crunching finish against Ezra Lutton.

1 Nc3 c5 [After the game I mentioned to Stuart Conquest that White had previously used 1 Nc3 to beat a grandmaster, but on reflection I think this was the 'other Lutton' - E Josiah. It is obviously a family opening, although I understand that the Luttons may have learnt it from their coach. That game went 1 ..Nf6 2 e4 d6 3 f4 g6 4 Nf3 Bg7 5 Be2 c5 6 0-0 Nc6 7 Qe1 0-0 8 d3 Nd4 9 Bd1 Bg4 10 Nxd4 cxd4 11 Ne2 Qb6 12 h3 Bxe2 13 Qxe2 Rac8 14 g4 Rc5 15 Qg2 Nd7 16 g5 e6 17 h4 f6 18 Bg4 f5 19 exf5 gxf5 20 Bf3 Rfc8 21 Rf2 d5 22 h5 Qc6 23 Bd1 a5 24 Qg3 Kh8 25 Kh1 Rg8 26 Qh3 Bf8 27 h6 Bd6 28 b3 Rc3 29 Bb2 Nf8 30 Bh5 Ng6 31 Bxg6 Rxg6 32 Bxc3 Qxc3 33 Raf1 Qc7 34 Qf3 b5 35 Re2 Bb4 36 Qf2 Bc3 37 Re5 Qd6 38 Qe2 Kg8 39 Qh5 Kf7 40 Rf2 Kf8 41 Rfe2 Qd7 and now a sweet finish...

42 Qxg6 1-0, Lutton,E Josiah-Prokopchuk, BCF Major Open 2002.] 2 e4 a6 3 f4 b5 4 Nf3 Bb7 (Of course, Stuart is no stranger to the avant garde. Attempts to 'out-weird' him are bound to fail) 5 d3 d6 6 Be2 g6 7 0-0 Bg7 8 Qe1 Nc6 9 f5 Nf6 10 Bd1 b4 11 Ne2 Qd7 12 a3 (Probably a little too wild. White should do something about his attacked f-pawn) 12 ..gxf5 13 Ng3 fxe4 14 Nxe4 Nxe4 15 dxe4 h6 16 Qg3 Rg8 17 Qf4 Bf6 18 axb4 [18 Qxh6 Qg4 19 Qd2 Qxe4 is good for Black] 18 ..Nxb4 19 c3 Nd3 20 Qxh6 Qg4 21 Qd2 Qxe4 22 Ba4+ Kd8 23 Bc2 c4 24 b3? (Allows a crunching finish. Can you spot it?)

The three heroes of Saturday - Williams, Greet and Bosboom were all cut down today. Williams' game with Korchnoi was a heavyweight encounter and reflected well on both players. It looked like the young Englishman might be getting something for a while, but Viktor's mighty b-pawn swung it in the end.

White could perhaps have tried 33 Rxa2!? bxa2 34 Qxa2 with good chances.] 33 ..Rxf2 34 Kxf2 Nxf6 [Forced. If 34 ..Nb6 35 Bf3! and Black is on his last legs.] 35 Bf3 e4 36 Rd6 Qxd6!
