THE 80TH BRITISH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS & CONGRESS - DUNDEE 1993

This is the furthest north we have ever taken the congress. Hitherto, the event has been in Edinburgh (thrice), Glasgow (once) and Ayr (once). We expected fewer entries and in the end were only 775 players against a predicted 825. This shortfall was primarily due to the reluctance of the Scots to support the event. At one time, it seemed all the entry would be from England. Their absence may have been caused by the Scottish Centenary Congress being just down the road in St. Andrews only two weeks before our event. The SCA had not decided on this at the time Dundee was chosen. That was partly to celebrate the achievements of locals Colin McNab and Paul Motwani in becoming Scotland's first ever GMs. It was thought this might help obtain local sponsorship but this was not to be. We did receive support from the local Watson & Phillip Charities Trust which was used to reduce the entry fees of Dundee juniors. At the last moment Raymond Mays Cars sponsored best game prizes in the Championship of £150 for each of the 11 rounds. However, they are located in Lincolnshire.

Michael Hennigan took the lead in the British Championship with 5/5 and it seemed he was all set to lead from start to finish. Andrew Martin put paid to this in the penultimate round by beating him. Thus any of 7 players could have won the title going into the last round and there remained a danger of a 5-way tie. Dharshan Kumaran and Michael took no prisoners and won comfortably to tie for first place with 8½/11, no wimpish draws for them. This was a wholly unexpected result.

Julian Hodgson started out as a huge favourite to retain the British title. There were many more experienced players in the field than these two young Londoners. It bodes well for the future of the game that fresh talent is already on the heels of our leading players.

At the time of writing, the play-off has yet to take place as Dharshan fell ill. This will be sponsored by Raymond Mays Cars and the winner will receive an invitation to the Hastings Premier.

John Emms secured a 9-round grandmaster performance norm in the tournament but fell away at the end. Mark Ferguson surprised everybody, including himself, by storming through to an IM norm, gaining 60 rating points in the process. Afterwards he expressed the fear that it was a one-off, but I have little doubt this 16-year-old will secure similar results in the future.

The sports hall was plenty large enough at 10,000 sq.ft. This wouldn't have been true if the entry had been as large as in Plymouth 1992. Next year we will be in Norwich, which is twice the size. The only complaint was the lighting which some of the older players (e.g. Hebden, Hodgson) found a strain. An analysis room was created by erecting a marquee.

As one would expect, the local people were most co-operative and hospitable. The self-catering houses were especially favoured and many liked being on campus, yet also virtually immediately in town. However some people couldn't see the point in coming to a town so far north which wasn't a resort and which wasn't supported by the Scottish players. While there, I went to see Aberdeen, the venue for which is probably even better than Plymouth. It is hard to believe we should go even further afield and we can only consider that as a possibility if they raise sponsorship. Glasgow is also being considered and the Borders for our last visit to Scotland this century.

It now seems traditional for several Indian children to visit the event. The only one to win a title this time was 6-year-old Tania Sachdev, netting the Under-8 Girls'. The Haslingers continue to make their mark on the trophies, this time it was the turn yet again of Mandy and finally Stewart after trying since 1987. Several juniors and families annex one title after another each year.

The Under-18 Championship, like the Under-21 before it, has become completely unrepresentative. This is partly because, now FIDE have lowered the rating entry point to 2005, the Major Open is an even greater attraction.

The players gave me no mandate for change this year.

Several meetings were held at the event as usual. That with star players was bedeviled by people wanting to turn their attention to administrative matters, especially about the bitterness surrounding the World Championship. That properly belonged at the meeting with organisers, rather than with the BCF Management Board when the event is in England. It was refreshing to hear the viewpoint of administrators not personally caught up in the arguments.

You won't be surprised to learn there was a play, acted rather dauntingly in a proper theatre. I played the part of Campomanes (type-cast some say), growing from an egg to a monster in a few seconds. It was called 'Judittic Spark' and was written, produced and directed by Bruce Birchall. The youngsters seemed to enjoy themselves, but I fear we will be expected to put on 'Chess' soon. Bruce also provided coaching in the mornings, aimed primarily at parent beginners.

The Richard Boxall Plate for Service to the Congress was awarded to Eric Croker who has been attending the congress since 1984, mainly working on the Major Open with David Wallace. The other members of the control team were George Smith, Mike O'Hara, Rod McShane, Richard Furness, David Welch, Roy Brown, David, Paul and Richard Carpenter, Victor Cross, Roger Edwards, Neil Graham, Alex McFarlane, Peter Purland, David Reid, John Robinson, Daphne Russell, Phil Short, Denis Walker, Gerry Walsh, Alec Webster and David Woodruff. Malcolm Pein was in charge of the commentary with occasional help from Mark Condie and Graham Lee. The Mrs Edwards and Hatto manned the BCF stand. This long list fails to include the demo board operators, move runners and people who helped set upon Saturday. Truly, our events have a reputation of employing far more controllers than their counter-parts elsewhere in the world.
