DERBY’S SECOND

Derbyshire Chess Association’s second congress (last year a small event without a Premier was held) attracted forty-five competitors and there is little doubt that this enthusiastically organised and controlled event will become a permanent fixture in the Easter Chess Calendar.

Eight invited players competed in the Premier, run on the Swiss System over six rounds. Unfortunately, insufficient time was available for a further round which would have made the event an all-play-all.

The two favourites were the “veterans” (all the others are in their early twenties) C. G. Hilton and A. Phillips, the 1954 co-British Champion. It soon became clear however, that Phillips was suffering from lack of recent tournament practice when in the first round he spoilt a good position against Hilton and lost. Apart from a neat victory over F. N. Stephenson, he could only draw three other games. In the last round he was opposed to R. S. Scowen, who until then had only mustered half a point. In a promising attacking position, Phillips cheerfully left a bishop en prise, in the knowledge that he was threatening mate. Scowen simply played PxB which simultaneously defended against the mate and despite frantic efforts by Phillips, he successfully hung on to his extra piece.

The comparative similarity in the strengths of the competitors, not unnaturally resulted in a fairly high percentage (58%) of draws. A few of these were of the “grand master” variety but most were hard fought, particularly Hilton v Richardson and Phillips v Hindle. J. A. Lawrence, who drew all his games, and P. L. Roe both played steadily. K. B. Richardson unluckily had the black pieces against Hilton, Hindle, Phillips and Roe and deserved an even higher placing. F. N. Stephenson also played better than his score suggests and the game on page 255 demonstrates he was rather unlucky against Hilton. O. M. H.
