§ in round 5 David Houston won with Black against one of the two Bangladeshi players surnamed Rahman but it is not known which one (either Tahmidur, no.81, or Almasur, no.119)

The Guardian, 25 August 1990 (Leonard Barden): "Game of the week has to be six-year-old George Hassapis’s victory over Fide master and US life master Orest Popovych in the launch game for the current Lloyds Bank international at Marble Arch, London.

"It happened, as world records sometimes do, rather accidentally. Hassapis was the substitute for another six-year-old who couldn’t make it that day, while Popovych stepped in at the last minute when a grandmaster failed to arrive for the open-air game with giant pieces. Hassapis chose the variant of the Sicilian Defence pioneered by the Soviet grandmaster Sveshnikov, and pounced on move 13 when Popovych allowed a tactic wrecking White’s central bind. White’s 18th lost a piece, but if instead 18 Qb7 Qb8! 19 Qxb8 (19 Qxe7 Qxb6+ and Ra7 traps the queen) Rfcb8 20 Be3 Rxb2 when Black has an extra pawn with good winning chances.

"When Popovych — who twice turned down a draw against Bobby Fischer during their game in the 1956 US Open — resigned, the result decisively broke one of the longest standing chess records, set 70 years ago. The previous youngest win against a recognised master in single combat was prodigy Samuel Reshevsky’s victory at age eight over Richard Griffith, former editor of the British Chess Magazine, British champion in 1912, and co-author of Modem Chess Openings. A remarkable feature of their historic encounter, which took place at the Gambit Chess Rooms off Cannon Street, London, in August 1920, was that both sides played without sight of the board. Reshevsky later named it as the first game of his long and still enduring career which really satisfied him."

BCM, October 1990, p427-428: "The 14th Lloyds Bank Masters was probably the best of the series. It had no fewer than 220 entries, of whom 214 finished the course of ten rounds in the excellent playing conditions of the Cumberland Hotel, Marble Arch.
Just as last year, it was a battle royal between the home stars and the mainly Soviet contingent of strong visitors. Stuart Conquest finally finished first, Mihai Suba, starting with 6(6), made a bid for an Olympiad place, and Olympiad players Speelman, Nunn and Chandler were not seen at their best.

"A publicity boost for chess came when an outdoor exhibition game on large pieces resulted in a swift win for young
George Hassapis, only 6, against US master Orest Popovych, who extended Fischer in his best period, 25 years ago. A front-page photo and extensive story in The Guardian resulted.

"Just as last year, a Soviet representative from the Caucasus finally took the spotlight. Last year Azmaiparashvili won by half a point from Ian Rogers. This year Zurab Sturua, another Georgian, but one who does not even have the GM title, took home the big money after his tie for first place.

"Yet the main story has to be the performance of Stuart Conquest, who had a wonderful winning run, put an end to Suba’s fine sequence by a bold long-term knight sacrifice, and has probably clinched the GM title as a result. The former Hastings, now Bristol, player had 7½(8) before losing to Michael Adams, who seems to have the Indian sign on him.

"Your editor [Bernard Cafferty] noticed one touching scene, which may have escaped the attention of most. Amongst the crowd willing Conquest on was his former trainer, the veteran IM Cenek Kottnauer. After this latest success, the tall Czech-born Kottnauer made a slight gesture of approval to his ‘lad’. Conquest, from a distance, caught the sign and acknowledged it by a short bow of the head. You don’t need to punch the air or even to exchange words to show your delight in circumstances like this; a lesson indeed to some of the more demonstrative of our brethren.

"Another success was the GM norm for Joe Gallagher, his final one. Jon Levitt also made the norm, but still has more effort to come.

"An innovation was the Family Championship, open to relatives. Susan and Keith Arkell finally won; other couples were in contention such as the Maric sisters, Sher (USSR) and his wife Grinfeld, and Ian and Cathy Rogers (but the Australian was not in the same good form as last year).

"Leading scores: 1-3 Conquest, Adams, Sturua 8(10) £1,150 each; 4-8 Kaidanov (USSR), Suba, Nunn, Gallagher, Levitt 7½; 9-21 Chandler, Hodgson, Speelman, Timoschenko (USSR), Wells, Emms, Ernst (S), Barua (IND), Velickovic (Y), McNab (SCO), Naumkin (USSR), Fatin (EGY), Martin 7; ...

"Jim Plaskett could not maintain the form of Eastbourne; he began with a loss to Canadian D. Southam and finished with a zero against the steady Egyptian Fatin, who also extended Timoschenko.

"The strength in depth can be seen from the results of the last round. The only decisive result in the top eight pairings came on board 4: Nunn v Howell.. Conquest v Sturua on top board was a quick draw; Kaidanov v Adams on second board was a much longer tussle in which the Russian seemed to have the better of the opening.

"Amongst those finishing on 6½ were Alisa Maric, Keith Arkell, Mark Hebden, Glenn Flear, Ginsburg (USA), Chris Ward, A. Suetin and Andy Soltis.

"Soviet veteran Suetin at the good chess age of 64 took the prize for veterans. He pointed out that, unlike the hungry young Soviet players, he was only here to show his wife London. His trip was financed by an author’s fee for updating a Pergamon book on the openings. He found the student accommodation rather rudimentary, but that is the state that Soviet masters have been reduced to by recent developments."

Date Notes
14 July 2021 241 games posted on BritBase for the first time, plus a game from the tournament launch. Games sourced from ChessBase but checked against the bulletin. As a result dates and round numbers have been added, and names corrected. For example, one of the games ChessBase have listed as being played in the tournament by Demis Hassabis was in fact played by his six-year-old brother George at the tournament launch. I've added as full a crosstable as appears to be available. The tournament bulletin had players and scores but not individual results, while the 1992 BCF Yearbook had a partial crosstable of the top 22 players. I have extended this to take account of results from the games database but it is not complete. Has anyone got a full crosstable?
22 July 2021 Ten more games, played by David Houston, submitted by David McAlister, for which many thanks. I've also added in some details of games that were lost on time as shown in the bulletin. Now 251 games, plus the tournament launch game.
