Paignton Chess Congress. September 3rd to 9th, 1967

Bv W. R. HARTSTON

The seventeenth annual congress of the Devon C.C.A. was this year enlarged to include an international ladies’ event. The competitors were the same eight who had played at Havering the previous week, and indeed the results of the tournaments were remarkably similar. The main feature of interest was the play of the Women’s World Champion, Miss Gaprindashvili, who showed herself to be far superior to her rivals, and, as will be seen from the cross-table below, won in most convincing fashion.

Although the standard of play was somewhat disappointing the four leaders all played some good chess. The following game is typical of the devastating style of the World Champion. [Gaprindashvili - Vreeken]

In the Premier tournament the favourites were the four internationals competing: Clarke, Wade, Basman, and myself. Clarke and I both seemed in a peaceful mood, however, and by drawing all our games in the first three rounds put ourselves almost out of the hunt. Basman, meanwhile, had had three straight wins and looked very well placed. The following round, however, he blundered away the exchange when in a winning position to lose to Patterson and the struggle for first prize was again wide open. The machinations of the Swiss System then continued by providing a short all-play-all tournament between the leaders: Patterson, Wade, Basman, and Gibbs. All the games between these players were drawn except, in the penultimate round, when Basman left a Rook en prise to lose to Wade. This enabled me to recover some ground and, after drawing in the last round against Patterson, to take a somehat undeserved share of the prize money.

The fine result of the Cambridge University player Patterson was the highlight of the tournament. By remaining undefeated and sharing first prize with Wade he confirmed the promise shown by his good results earlier this year at Southend and Bognor.

K. M. Oliff was forced to withdraw owing to ill-health when his score was 2½ out of 5. The following game was the most interesting in the Premier— [Lawrence - Sugden]

The prizewinners in the other sections were as follows—

Swiss Challengers A: (1-2) Michael E Brigden (Bristol), (Paul) John Patience (Southampton) 5½/7; (3) James T Pascoe 4½; (4-6) John R Crampton, Robert G W Elwell, Anthony Sadler 4.
